Tooting started out at USC, around the same time as the Stanford Prisoner Experiment. At that time psychology majors broke into teams, and would switch between the Headcase role and the Tooter role. Everyone would play defense and offense, so to speak. The idea came from psychoanalysis, where every analyst must themselves be analyzed before they can start seeing patients. Playing a Headcase helps you understand diagnoses on a visceral level. These psych majors got to be basically themselves when they played the Tooters, and it’s interesting to note the differences in people who started out as Tooters and then switched to Headcases and those who began as Headcases and then were Tooters. The task of Tooters was to diagnose correctly the disorders concocted and performed by the Headcases. The Headcases were interested in resisting discharge by surprising Tooters with symptoms inconsistent with Tooter diagnoses, but still within the boundaries of actual DSM diagnoses as determined by the referees.

What might a Headcase do to create novel symptoms?

A Headcase gets points based on how many symptoms they exhibit. Referees behind the mirror give them points, team leaders get to challenge these points or propose points the referees might have missed. For instance, a referee credits a player with a point for “Malingering” and the team leader for the Tooters could challenge it, saying, “All the guy did was ask for a Motrin.”

Recruit another Headcase, ensnare them in your delusional construct for a folie a deux.

Which important trends in actual psychiatry had their origins in Instatoots? There could be a theory that when a person experiences delusional thinking, their unconscious mind is in effect looking for novel symptoms in exactly the same way as the Headcase does it. Unconsciously, we see the delusional potential in any given situation, and can produce psychosis on purpose as a way of solving a problem for the organism.

The idea was replicated by many psychology departments around the world, and different styles of Tooting emerged. There was a shared progression with variants based on a place’s wealth and culture.

Some Tooters recruited real mental patients, who would be paid to be themselves so that the psych majors could keep on being themselves the whole time. This happened a lot in the Baltic nations.

The history of Tooting, then, lies parallel to the history of inpatient psychiatric treatment.

Other variants: Tooter fan fiction. Tooter card game. International Tooter convention. Attempts to ban Tooting (eventually successful). What happens to Tooter Rink workers when Tooting is outlawed? They can continue to play their roles, for a paying audience. It becomes Improv theater, which causes scripts to tend toward the histrionic or, most especially, humorous. We laugh at the Headcases with the assistance of the Tooters, who play the role of straight man.

“No citizen shall impersonate a member of a protected class of citizens, such as women, ethnic minorities, and the disabled.” That was the law that spelled the end to IT. Tooting was given outlaw luster and its popularity spread beyond college campuses into Mass Culture.

IT wasn’t that popular until colleges started to ban it.

Based on Tooter data, it became possible for clinicians to predict what a patient’s delusional construct would consist in, before they expressed it. A method was developed to take inventory of the psyche at its baseline, pair it with a similar baseline in a particular Headcase, and see what that Headcase’s delusions ended up being.

Tooters are paid volunteers. Institute Hall is interested in how to chemically induce psychiatric symptoms. These symptoms can then be studied via live video feed broadcast to research psychologists.

Nobody in Drury County knows that DNWM and NYFG have mothers who were Malagasy twins representing Venus as Morning Star and Evening Star. This is the truth of the story, to be related in an epilogue.

DNWM goes in as someone who has to be right, someone who wants to convince the world of the truth as he understands it. His lack of range of motion in the phenomenal realm is accompanied by a strong catalyst action in the noumenal realm. He is a strong middle pillar because of his ancestry: Gullah warriors as well as the legitimate authority of Drury County as embodied in NWM: Gr. Of what energy is DNWM the conduit? It is the switch from Venus in her Morningstar aspect (the younger Malagasy twin, mother of NYFG) to Venus as the Evenstar (the older Malagasy twin, mother of DNWM).

NYFG goes in as someone who wishes to leave no trace, and comes out as someone who wants to convince the world of the truth as she understands it. She assumes the title of her name, she creates her voice and is given the means to express a model of sexuality that is actually generative of energy, as opposed to Morningstar sexuality which depletes the female of her “orgones” in the service of patriarchy, that is to say Morning Star sexuality castrates the female and Evening Star sexuality gives her the map of her clitoris. She is vocal in the phenomenal realm; in the noumenal realm she is a silent observer of the eternal. She speaks in the phenomenal informed by her observations in the noumenal.
