Preacher’s Lament

My love for God has enough weight
So that I might cling
To Earth as a baby
To a rounded belly
With a neighbor
Inside
With enough love down here
Between that warmth and this
To feel close
To filled up.

I respect God enough
To know
It is a better use of God’s time
For God to do things
Away from my site
Beyond the thinned dim and
The bright-limned limits
Of what’s there to find.

I love God enough so that I know
You must be fallen to love.

I love God enough so that I see
God would not make billions of creatures
Just to torture most through a bad infinity.

I see God enough that I say
“Love is for wind bound in mud!”

I respect my love
For God enough
To know
That perfection is changeless,
And that God is still moving.
